WHAT IS UKVI?

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is a division of the Home Office responsible for the United Kingdom's visa system. It was formed in 2013 from the section of the UK Border Agency that had administered the visa system. UKVI operates the UK visa system, managing applications from foreign nationals seeking to visit or work in the UK, and also considers applications from businesses and educational institutions seeking to become sponsors for foreign nationals. It also considers applications from foreign nationals seeking protection or British citizenship and manages appeals of those who have been denied visas.

'IELTS for UKVI' is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application.

IELTS UKVI is for Visas and Immigrations to the United Kingdom.

What is the difference between IELTS and IELTS UKVI? Is the course, pattern, and structure same?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. UKVI is the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration service.
If you need to take an IELTS test to prove your English skills to an employer or university, then you just need an IELTS test, either General for living and working purposes, or Academic for study.

If you also need your IELTS test in order to qualify for a visa to the UK, then you need a UKVI IELTS test, either General or Academic. It isn't any harder, except that it's deliberately made especially hard to cheat by having someone else pretending to be you. That's already pretty difficult anyway, which is why the UK prefers IELTS, but the UKVI conditions are even more stringent, and therefore slightly more expensive.

The IELTS UKVI is only required for UK Visa Immigration. It is the same test, some more differences are:
  1. It is more expensive
  2. There are surveillance cameras in the examination halls, entrance corridor and speaking test room.
  3. You may use your IELTS UKVI results just like you would a regular IELTS test. It is the UK that will reject a non-UKVI result when immigrating.
Candidates are assessed in four different departments:
  1. Listening – 4 sections- 40 items, 30 min
  2. Academic reading- 3 sections, 40 items, 60 min
  3. Academic writing – 2 tasks (150 & 250 words) 60 min
  4. General training reading – 3 sections, 40 items, 60 min
  5. Speaking – 11 to 14 min

  • IELTS-General Training: This test is taken by the candidates willing to move to the UK or who want to study below degree level.

IELTS (Academic or General Training) This test is taken by people who are applying for Tier 1 and Tier 2 visas to the UK. The formulation of specific administrative requirements takes place in the UK Home office. Thus, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for UKVI is designed to fulfill this purpose. The test report form is slightly different to show that you have taken the test at an IELTS UK visa session.
