It also considers applications from foreign nationals seeking protection or British citizenship and manages appeals of those who have been denied visas.
'IELTS for UKVI' is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application.

While there is no change in the content, format or level of difficulty and scoring, IELTS for UKVI simply follows certain extra security protocols to ensure the authenticity of the test taker. Also, your Test Report Form (TRF) may look slightly different from the one give for IELTS Academic or General Training.
IELTS Life Skills is a test for those who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills to acquire a UK VISA, and is available at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels A1 and B1. It is designed to meet the requirements of UKVI for certain visa categories and other immigration purposes.
This test is for test takers wishing to study in the UK below degree level or others who are required to take a SELT test for a direct application to UK Visas and Immigration. The test involves Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

It isn't any harder, except that it's deliberately made especially hard to cheat by having someone else pretending to be you.
